The MSI MAG B850 Gaming Plus Max Wi-Fi is built around the AM5 socket with a single CPU socket and B850 chipset compatibility, housed in a standard ATX form factor measuring 304.8 mm × 243.8 mm. It supports Wi-Fi up to Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), covering all major standards from Wi-Fi 4 through Wi-Fi 7, and includes Bluetooth 5.4, though aptX is not supported. The board features RGB lighting, a clear CMOS button for easy BIOS resets, and is designed to accommodate overclocking, while dual BIOS is not available. It does not include an integrated CPU or integrated graphics, and carries a three-year warranty.
This motherboard supports DDR5 memory across four slots in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum capacity of 256 GB. The standard rated speed tops out at 5600 MHz, while overclocking allows speeds of up to 8200 MHz. ECC memory is not supported.
The rear I/O panel provides a varied USB selection, including one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, and four USB 2.0 ports; there are no USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, Gen 2x2, USB 4, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 ports. For display output, a single DisplayPort is available, while HDMI, DVI, and VGA connectors are absent. Networking is handled by one RJ45 port, and there are no eSATA or PS/2 ports on this board.
For internal expansion, the board offers four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and four USB 2.0 ports through headers, while Gen 2, Gen 2x2, and USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 expansion connectors are not present. Storage connectivity includes three M.2 sockets and four SATA 3 connectors, with no SATA 2, U.2, or mSATA options available. Cooling is supported by six fan headers, and a TPM connector is also provided on the board.
The board's expansion layout is anchored by one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for the primary graphics card or other full-bandwidth devices, complemented by one PCIe x4 slot and two PCIe x1 slots for additional cards. There are no PCIe 2.0, 3.0, or 4.0 x16 slots, no PCIe x8 slots, and no legacy PCI slots.
The board supports 7.1-channel audio output and includes an S/PDIF out port for digital audio passthrough. Two analog audio connectors are provided for physical connections.
The board's RAID support covers RAID 0 for striping and RAID 1 for mirroring, while RAID 5, RAID 10, and RAID 0+1 configurations are not supported.
