The MSI MPG X870E Carbon Max Wi-Fi is built around the AM5 socket with X870 chipset compatibility, using a standard ATX form factor that measures 304.8 mm × 243.8 mm. It houses a single CPU socket and does not include an integrated CPU or integrated graphics. Wireless connectivity spans Wi-Fi 4 through Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), complemented by Bluetooth 5.4, though aptX audio codec support is not present. Video output is handled through an HDMI 2.1 port, and the board supports overclocking with a clear CMOS button for easy BIOS resets. RGB lighting is included, while dual BIOS is not. The board does not feature dual BIOS, and it comes backed by a 3-year warranty.
The board supports DDR5 memory across four slots arranged in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum capacity of 256 GB. Native RAM speed tops out at 5600 MHz, while overclocking headroom extends up to 9000 MHz for those looking to push performance further. ECC memory is not supported.
The rear I/O panel offers a well-stocked USB lineup, led by nine USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports. High-bandwidth connectivity is further covered by two USB 4 40Gbps ports and two Thunderbolt 4 ports, while USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, and USB 4 20Gbps ports are absent. Networking is handled by two RJ45 Ethernet ports, and video output is available via a single HDMI output; DisplayPort, DVI, and VGA outputs are not present. There are no eSATA or PS/2 ports on this board.
For internal expansion, the board provides four USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers and four USB 2.0 headers, along with one USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 connector; USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 expansion headers are not included. Storage connectivity is covered by four M.2 sockets and four SATA 3 connectors, while SATA 2, U.2, and mSATA are not present. Cooling is well served by seven fan headers, and a TPM connector is also on board for security module support.
The board's expansion slot layout centers on a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot as the primary full-bandwidth option, supported by one PCIe x8 slot and one PCIe x4 slot for additional cards. There are no PCIe 4.0, 3.0, or 2.0 x16 slots, and PCIe x1 and legacy PCI slots are absent as well.
The onboard audio delivers a 7.1-channel configuration with a DAC signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB, supported by two analog audio connectors on the rear panel. Digital audio output is also available through an S/PDIF Out port.
The board supports a broad range of RAID configurations, including RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10, covering common setups for both performance and redundancy. RAID 0+1 is not supported.
