The Portronics Muffs M5 uses an over-ear fit and a closed-back design, providing a more immersive listening experience. It comes with stereo speakers and includes a detachable, tangle-free cable for added convenience. The headphone is not designed specifically for kids and offers no water resistance, so it is intended for regular indoor or casual use.
The Muffs M5 handles noise reduction on two fronts, combining active noise cancellation (ANC) with passive noise isolation to cut down on unwanted ambient sound. Audio is reproduced through 40 mm driver units covering a standard frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The headphone does not support spatial audio and does not use a neodymium magnet in its driver construction.
The Muffs M5 is equipped with a built-in rechargeable battery offering up to 50 hours of battery life, and it charges via USB Type-C for straightforward cable compatibility. A battery level indicator lets users keep track of remaining charge at a glance. The battery is not removable, and the headphone supports neither wireless charging nor solar charging.
The Muffs M5 supports both wireless and wired connectivity, with the wireless side handled by Bluetooth 5.3 and a maximum range of 10 meters. It does not support any advanced audio codecs, including aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Low Latency, aptX Lossless, AAC, LDAC, or LDHC, nor does it include Bluetooth LE Audio or Auracast. Fast pairing and NFC-based pairing are also absent from the feature set.
The Muffs M5 can be used as a headset and features four microphones with noise-canceling capability, making it suitable for calls in noisy environments. An ambient sound mode allows users to let in surrounding audio when needed, and on-device controls are built directly into the headphone. There is no in-line control panel on the cable, and the headphone lacks both a mute function and in/on-ear detection for automatic playback pausing. It carries a one-year warranty.
