The Sony RX1R III is a compact camera body measuring 113.3 x 67.9 x 87.5 mm with a volume of 673.14 cm³ and a weight of 498 g, making it a relatively contained package for a full-frame system. It features weather sealing and is rated for operation between 0 °C and 40 °C, adding a degree of environmental resilience. For framing, it relies on a 3-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 2359k dots alongside an electronic viewfinder (EVF) that matches at 2359k dots and delivers 100% coverage — though neither the screen nor the EVF tilts or flips out. The camera includes a hot shoe for attaching external accessories but has no built-in flash or lens hood included in the box, and it is not a system camera, meaning it does not support interchangeable lenses.
At the heart of the RX1R III sits a 61 MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor — not a stacked variant — paired with a fixed 35 mm lens that opens to f/2 at its only focal length, with a minimum focus distance of 0.14 m and the ability to focus to infinity. The sensor's native ISO range reaches 32000, expandable to 102400, and exposure times stretch from 1/4000 s mechanically (1/8000 s electronically) out to a full 30 seconds, with full manual control over ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure. Autofocus is handled through 693 phase-detection points, supported by AF tracking, touch autofocus, and manual focus, while continuous shooting runs at 5 fps in burst mode. The lens features rounded aperture blades, and the camera includes a built-in HDR mode and a two-stage shutter, though there is no optical image stabilization or sensor-shift stabilization of any kind.
The RX1R III records video at up to 2160p/30 fps with a bitrate of 300 Mbps, and also supports a 24p cinema mode as well as slow-motion video recording. Autofocus during video is handled by phase-detection with continuous AF active throughout recording, keeping subjects sharp without manual intervention. For audio, the camera includes a built-in dual stereo microphone array alongside both a 3.5 mm microphone input and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, giving users the option to monitor audio or connect an external microphone directly.
The RX1R III is powered by a 1020 mAh removable, rechargeable battery with a CIPA-rated life of 300 shots per charge. A battery level indicator is built in, allowing users to keep track of remaining power during a shoot without having to guess.
The RX1R III runs on Sony's Bionz XR processor and supports raw file capture alongside an external memory slot for storage. Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) as well as Bluetooth 4.2, with smartphone remote control available but no NFC or GPS on board. Wired connections include USB Type-C and HDMI output, and the camera features an advanced hot shoe for accessory attachment. It is limited to a single card slot and does not offer first-party live streaming support.
