The device is neither a rugged build nor a folding design, pointing to a standard candybar form factor.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max features a 6.9″ OLED/AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 1200 x 2608 px and a pixel density of 416 ppi, paired with a 120Hz refresh rate and Always-On Display support. The panel supports HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, and is protected by branded damage-resistant glass. A secondary screen is also present, running at a resolution of 976 x 596 px.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 3nm chipset with an 8-thread CPU running at 2 x 4.6 GHz and 6 x 3.62 GHz using big.LITTLE architecture with HMP support, and a TDP of 8.2W. It comes with 16GB of DDR5 RAM running at 5300 MHz and 512GB of internal storage, with a maximum supported memory amount of 24GB and a peak memory bandwidth of 85.1 GB/s across 2 memory channels. The Adreno 830 GPU clocks at 1200 MHz, supports DirectX 12, OpenGL 3.2, OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 3, and drives up to 2 displays with 1536 shading units. The chipset also includes integrated LTE, integrated graphics, TrustZone security, ECC memory support, and multithreading, while the cache hierarchy spans 192 KB L1, 12 MB L2, and 8 MB L3. In Geekbench 6, the device scores 3234 single-core and 10059 multi-core, and the platform is fully 64-bit compatible.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max carries a triple rear camera system, each lens at 50MP, with apertures of f/1.7, f/2.4, and f/2.6, covering a focal range of 17mm to 115mm and offering 5x optical zoom. All three sensors are CMOS with back-side illumination, and the system includes optical image stabilisation, laser autofocus, phase-detection autofocus, and touch autofocus, along with continuous autofocus during video recording. Video capture reaches up to 4320p at 30fps with support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision recording, plus slow-motion and timelapse modes. Manual controls extend to exposure, ISO, focus, and white balance, though manual shutter speed is not available, and the rear flash is a dual-tone LED unit with two LEDs. The 50MP front camera has an aperture of f/2.2 and supports HDR, burst mode, and panorama, but does not include a front-facing flash, a secondary front lens, or an under-display placement. 360-degree panorama and 3D photo or video recording are also not supported.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max runs Android 16, a free and open-source platform that supports multi-user access, on-device machine learning, offline voice recognition, voice commands, and device position tracking. Privacy tools include clipboard warnings, location privacy options, camera and microphone access controls, and the ability to block app tracking, though Mail Privacy Protection and cross-site tracking blocking are not available. The interface offers dark mode, dynamic theming, theme customization, widgets, customizable notifications, notification permission controls, a media picker, Live Text, full-page screenshots, split-screen multitasking, Picture-in-Picture, sharing intents, app offloading, an extra dim mode, and a child lock. Games can be played while downloading, and a battery health check is also present. Focus modes, Wi-Fi password sharing, Quick Start, and the ability to function as a PC are not supported, and the device does not receive direct OS updates from the vendor.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max houses a 7500 mAh rechargeable battery with a built-in level indicator, and comes with a charger included in the box. Wired fast charging is supported at 100W, while wireless charging runs at 50W, and reverse wireless charging is available at 22.5W. The battery is not removable.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max includes stereo speakers and supports aptX, aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive for Bluetooth audio, though aptX Lossless and LDAC are not available. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack and no built-in radio.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max supports 5G and accommodates two SIM cards, with wireless connectivity covering Wi-Fi 4, 5, 6, 6E, and 7 alongside Bluetooth 5.4 and NFC. Onboard sensors include a fingerprint scanner, GPS with Galileo support, gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, barometer, and infrared sensor, while a heart rate monitor, 3D facial recognition, iris scanner, ANT+, motion tracking, optical tracking, crash detection, emergency SOS via satellite, and a built-in projector are all absent. No stylus is included in the box.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max includes a video light, but does not feature a sapphire glass display, a curved display, or an e-paper display.
