Its 0.86″ LCD display renders at a resolution of 166×166 pixels and a pixel density of 272 ppi, though it does not feature an always-on mode, touch input, sapphire glass, or branded damage-resistant glass. The watch carries a 10 ATM water resistance rating, classifying it as waterproof for swimming and water-based activities. The band is 20mm wide and can be replaced, while the overall volume of the device sits at 21.76 cm³.

The Garmin Instinct E 40mm includes a broad set of onboard sensors suited to outdoor and fitness use. It features GPS for location tracking alongside a compass, barometer, accelerometer, and gyroscope for movement and environmental awareness. A heart rate monitor, pulse oximeter, and body temperature sensor round out the health-focused hardware. The watch does not include a cadence sensor, wind speed sensor, or perspiration monitor.

It records steps, distance, pace, elevation, and routes, and can detect activities automatically without manual input. Sleep tracking is supported and accompanied by sleep reports, while calorie intake tracking and exercise tagging add further depth to daily logging. The watch also includes a swim stroke counter, making it useful for pool sessions. It does not offer trackback mode, multi-sport mode, and is not designed for diving or golf.

The Garmin Instinct E 40mm is compatible with both iOS and Android devices and supports ANT+ for connecting to external accessories such as heart rate straps and other fitness peripherals. It does not include Wi-Fi, a cellular module, or NFC, keeping its wireless feature set focused and straightforward.

The Garmin Instinct E 40mm houses a rechargeable battery that is not removable and does not support wireless or solar charging. In smartwatch mode it lasts up to 14 days, while continuous GPS use brings that down to 21 hours and training mode is rated at 14 hours.

The Garmin Instinct E 40mm offers a solid set of health and utility features, including HRV tracking, VO2 max estimation, resting heart rate measurement, and fast/slow heart rate notifications, though it does not provide irregular heart rate warnings or a readiness and recovery score. On the navigation side, it supports Galileo satellites and acquires GPS quickly, but cannot upload maps. Wrist notifications, a silent alarm, a stopwatch, a phone finder function, and sunrise/sunset times are all present, while vibrating alerts, a smart alarm, call control, the ability to answer calls, voice commands, and a camera remote are not included. The watch also informs users about thunderstorm risk and holds 0.128GB of internal storage. It does not support fall detection, and comes with a one-year warranty.

The companion app is free and ad-free, requires an account, and can be personalised with widgets and custom settings. It covers a wide range of tracking and logging functions including calories burned, weight, BMI, water intake, temperature, and activity reports, along with an exercise diary, goal setting, inactivity alerts, and achievements. Live tracking, route support, maps, calendar sync, voice feedback, music playback, and video tutorials are all available. On the health side, the app does not offer coaching, a barcode scanner, period notifications, fertile window notifications, ovulation prediction, or start date prediction.

The Garmin Instinct E 40mm displays a battery level indicator and supports auto pause during workouts. It is compatible with external heart rate monitors and smart scales, and the companion software is accessible on Windows, Mac, and PC. The watch does not have an external memory slot or a 3.5mm audio jack.
