The Skullcandy Hesh 540 uses an over-ear fit and features a closed-back design with stereo speakers. It can be folded for more compact storage and comes with a travel bag included, adding to its portability. The detachable cable is tangle-free, giving users a tidier experience when switching to wired listening. The headphones are not designed for children and offer no water resistance, so they are best suited for dry, everyday environments.
The Hesh 540 delivers sound across a standard frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz through 40 mm drivers, with an impedance of 36 Ohms and a sound pressure level of 119.4 dB/mW. Active noise cancellation is supported alongside passive noise reduction, giving the headphones two layers of isolation from ambient sound. The drivers do not use a neodymium magnet. Spatial audio is also supported, adding a sense of dimensionality to compatible audio content.
The Hesh 540 is equipped with a built-in rechargeable battery rated at 65 hours of battery life, and it charges via USB Type-C. A battery level indicator is included so users can keep track of remaining charge at a glance. The battery is not removable, and the headphones support neither wireless charging nor solar power.
The Hesh 540 supports both wireless and wired connectivity, using Bluetooth 5.3 for its wireless connection with a maximum range of 10 meters and an audio latency of 50 ms. Fast pairing is supported for quicker device setup, though NFC pairing is not available. On the codec side, the headphones do not support aptX, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, aptX Lossless, AAC, LDAC, LDHC, Bluetooth LE Audio, or Auracast.
The Hesh 540 can be used as a headset and features four microphones with noise-canceling capability, making it suitable for calls in addition to music listening. An ambient sound mode lets users remain aware of their surroundings without removing the headphones, and in/on-ear detection automatically pauses playback when they are taken off. Multipoint connectivity supports up to two devices simultaneously, though there is no in-line control panel or control panel placed on a companion device. The headphones carry a one-year warranty.
