The MSI B850 MLG Edition is built around the AM5 socket and B850 chipset, housed in a standard ATX form factor measuring 304.8 mm wide and 243.8 mm tall, with a single CPU socket and no integrated CPU or graphics. Wireless connectivity is well covered, with Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and backwards compatibility through Wi-Fi 6E, 6, 5, and 4, complemented by Bluetooth 5.4, though aptX is not supported. The board offers HDMI 2.1 output, supports easy overclocking, and includes RGB lighting along with a straightforward BIOS reset function, while dual BIOS is not available. A three-year warranty is included.
The board supports DDR5 memory across four slots in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum capacity of 256GB. Overclocked speeds can reach up to 8400 MHz, offering headroom for high-performance memory kits. ECC memory is not supported.
The rear I/O provides a broad USB selection, including two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, and four USB 2.0 ports; there are no USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, USB 4, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 ports. Video output is limited to a single HDMI output, with no DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA connectors present. Networking is handled by one RJ45 port, and there are no eSATA or PS/2 ports on this board.
Internal connectivity is well equipped, with four M.2 sockets and four SATA 3 connectors for storage, while SATA 2, U.2, and mSATA are not available. Expansion USB headers include four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, four additional USB 3.0 ports, and four USB 2.0 ports through internal connectors. The board also features eight fan headers for cooling management and includes a TPM connector for platform security.
The board offers three expansion slots in total: one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot as the primary graphics slot, one PCIe x4 slot, and one PCIe x1 slot. There are no PCIe 4.0, 3.0, or 2.0 x16 slots, no PCIe x8 slots, and no legacy PCI slots.
The onboard audio solution supports 7.1-channel output and delivers a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB from its DAC. Two analog audio connectors are provided on the rear panel, and an S/PDIF Out port is included for digital audio passthrough.
The board supports RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10 configurations for storage array setup, while RAID 5 and RAID 0+1 are not available.
