The MSI B840M Gaming Plus Wi-Fi 6E is built around the AM5 socket with B840 chipset compatibility, housed in a square Micro-ATX form factor measuring 243.8 mm × 243.8 mm. It supports a single CPU and has no integrated processor or integrated graphics. Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi 4, 5, 6, and 6E alongside Bluetooth 5.3, though aptX audio codec support is not included. Video output is handled through an HDMI 2.1 port, and the board features RGB lighting as well as an easy CMOS reset button for straightforward BIOS recovery. Overclocking is supported, while dual BIOS is not present. MSI backs the board with a three-year warranty.
This board uses DDR5 memory across four slots arranged in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum supported capacity of 256GB. The standard rated speed tops out at 5600 MHz, while overclocking can push that figure up to 8000 MHz. ECC memory is not supported.
The rear I/O panel provides a varied USB selection, including one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, and four USB 2.0 ports; there are no USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, Gen 2x2, USB 4, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 ports. Display output is limited to a single HDMI port, with no DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA connectors present. Networking is covered by one RJ45 port, and there are no eSATA or PS/2 ports on this board.
For internal expansion, the board offers two USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers and four USB 2.0 headers, while Gen 2, Gen 2x2, and USB-C Gen 2 internal connectors are absent. Storage connectivity includes four SATA 3 connectors and two M.2 sockets, with no SATA 2, U.2, or mSATA support. A TPM connector is present, and five fan headers are available for cooling management.
The expansion slot layout is minimal but focused, offering one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot as the primary option for a discrete GPU or similar card, alongside one PCIe x4 slot for additional expansion. There are no PCIe 5.0, PCIe 3.0, PCIe 2.0, PCIe x8, PCIe x1, or legacy PCI slots on this board.
The board's audio solution supports 7.1-channel output and provides three analog audio connectors on the rear panel. A S/PDIF Out port is not included.
The board supports RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10 configurations for flexible storage setup options. RAID 5 and RAID 0+1 are not supported.
