The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max has a non-folding, non-rugged body measuring 162.9 × 77.6 × 8 mm and weighing 219 g, with a total volume of 101.13 cm³. A notable aspect of its build is its IP68-rated water resistance, which provides full waterproofing down to a depth of 6 m.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max features a 6.9″ OLED/AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 1200 × 2608 px at 416 ppi and a 120 Hz refresh rate, protected by branded damage-resistant glass. The display supports HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, and includes an Always-On Display mode. A secondary screen is also present, running at a resolution of 976 × 596 px.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, built on a 3 nm process with an 8-thread CPU running at 2 × 4.6 GHz and 6 × 3.62 GHz using big.LITTLE and HMP technologies, alongside an Adreno 830 GPU clocked at 1200 MHz with 1536 shading units and support for up to 2 displays. The SoC integrates LTE, TrustZone security, and graphics APIs including DirectX 12, OpenGL 3.2, OpenGL ES 3.2, and OpenCL 3. It scores 3234 in Geekbench 6 single-core and 10059 in multi-core tests. Autofocus options include phase-detection, laser, touch, and continuous autofocus during video, while manual controls extend to exposure, ISO, focus, and white balance, though manual shutter speed is not available. Privacy tooling covers clipboard warnings, location controls, camera and microphone access management, and app tracking blocking, though cross-site tracking protection and Mail Privacy Protection are absent. Personalization options include theme customization, dynamic theming, dark mode, extra dim mode, and customizable notifications with granular permission controls. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max houses a non-removable rechargeable 7500 mAh battery with a battery level indicator. It supports fast wired charging at 100 W and wireless charging at 50 W, with a charger included in the box. Reverse wireless charging is also available at 22.5 W, allowing the device to top up other compatible accessories.
