The MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi is built around the AM5 socket with B850 chipset compatibility, housed in a standard ATX form factor measuring 304.8 mm wide by 243.8 mm tall. It accommodates a single CPU and carries no integrated processor or graphics. Wireless connectivity spans Wi-Fi 4 through Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), and Bluetooth 5.4 is included, though aptX audio is not supported. The board features dual BIOS with a dedicated clear CMOS button for straightforward recovery, along with overclocking support and RGB lighting. A three-year warranty is included, rounding out a general specification set suited to a current-generation AM5 build.
This motherboard supports DDR5 memory across four slots arranged in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum capacity of 256GB. Out of the box, RAM runs at up to 5600 MHz, while overclocking can push that ceiling to 8200 MHz for users seeking additional bandwidth. ECC memory is not supported.
The rear I/O panel provides a total of eight USB ports: four USB 2.0, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports. There are no USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, USB 4, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 ports present. For video output, a single DisplayPort is available, while HDMI, DVI, and VGA outputs are absent. Wired networking is handled by one RJ45 port, and there are no eSATA or PS/2 connections included.
Internal connectivity includes three M.2 sockets for NVMe or SATA-based solid-state drives, alongside four SATA 3 connectors for traditional storage devices; no SATA 2, mSATA, or U.2 sockets are present. Panel headers allow for four additional USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and four USB 2.0 ports through front-panel expansion. Cooling is well catered for with six fan headers distributed across the board, and a TPM connector is included for hardware-based security module support.
The board offers a total of four expansion slots: one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, and two PCIe x1 slots. There are no PCIe 2.0, PCIe 3.0, PCIe x4, PCIe x8, or legacy PCI slots included.
Audio output supports a 7.1-channel configuration, with two analog audio connectors available on the rear panel. A S/PDIF Out port is also present for digital audio passthrough to compatible receivers or DACs.
The board's RAID support covers RAID 0 for performance-oriented striping and RAID 1 for drive mirroring and redundancy. RAID 5, RAID 10, and RAID 0+1 configurations are not supported.
